It kind of gives a good point. The internet can sometimes kill religion. Proof? For instance, porn sites, hate group blogs, and memes/comics/videos making fun of religion whether it's Judaism, Catholicism, Christianity, Islam, etc. It makes me wonder how people can make fun of other's beliefs and practices over the web. Thus, possibly changing their minds at a certain point. Though, I do see criticism on sites about other religions.
Also, I agree that this topic would fall into Reform Judaism. Mainly, Modern Judaism when I think about it. It used to be that Jewish tradition had some strict rules/regulations to follow. I mean, honestly. One mistake or breaking one of the 613 commandments would kick you out of the Jewish community. Now, it has lessened a bit. Though, probably today the internet can also be not only a challenge to Judaism, but to other religions as well.
I agree with the question "Is internet killing religion?" The internet is a plethora of easy to access information and with a little bit of knowledge you can learn enough about the world to see that the notion of a God is absurd. I prefer logical to fantasy, and challenging what I know than to just finally blinding following what I was told. The internet makes learning new views on religion easier.
I agree with Jannica and Sandra that while this topic is interesting, it is difficult to categorize. I guess it could fall under either beliefs or practices. For beliefs, it could relate to Reform Judaism since this article deals with a lack of religion. While Reform Jews still identity with Judaism, they are much more lax on religious tradition and look to the Torah as more of a guideline to life, not a strict and rigid code. For practices, this could deal with nearly any faith group since the absence of religion is defying practices found in almost all religions. What I mean to say is that by not partaking in religion, one is defying the practice of religion itself. It's kind of paradoxical if that makes sense. (If not, sorry!)
I disagree with the premise of this PPT. Just because the rise of the internet took place concurrently with a rise in areligious beliefs does not mean one caused the other. It is simply that the technological revolution that led to the internet took place alongside a cultural enlightenment (as so often happens), one that led to an acceptance of the atheist, agnostic, and unsure. Now, it's certainly true that some met people through the internet who led them down the path that caused them to shirk their religious ties, it is also just as possible to find someone who would lead them down a religious path. That's my two cents.
I agree with this presentation that the internet is killing religion. I would categorize this as part of practices and beliefs. For example, Reform Judaism is lacking some traditions and rules compared to the orthodox who believe in every single commandment. If they would to break any of the 632 commandments they would be punished by exile or another way. They also don't take the torah as a way of life but taking concepts out of it to create ideas. Also, today what can't you find on the internet. I think that the internet is spreading terrible ideas on important topics such as religion, politics, major groups, and ect.
I agree with the question "Is Internet killing the Religion?" Reform Judaism is an example of applies to this question, known as lacking traditions and rules, compared to the Orthodox Judaism, which they believe in one rule, one God. By relying onto the Internet instead of Religion, this also applies that they are ignoring one of the 613 commandments, that if any Jewish people who aren't following all 613 commandments, then they will no longer involving into the Jewish community. Besides, there are other religions that impacts to this challenge as well.
The internet Is most defiantly killing religion. With people finding out new information about different subjects on the internet that they do not know before. If you look at in the view of other religions, you would think that one religion is destroying the other. The current conflict in palestine and is real is a religion conflict. Years ago we did not know about other religions disagreeing. So with the invention of internet people know things faster and in the long run change peoples view on all subjects.
It might be true that internet is killing religions. Because as science technology has been rapidly developed, people became to have more realistic thought which means they get to see religion as more different view. It would be hard for some people to believe about religion while they strongly get influenced by internet's power. However, if people have faith on religion, they would not be influenced by internet. There are still lots of religious people using internet everyday, and have strong faith in God. So we cannot generalize that internet is killing religion
The internet is to an extent eroding people's faiths in religion. Nowadays, people are more knowledgeable about both their own religion, and the religions of other people's, so the way they view God and their relationship with him changes. Religion as a whole won't die out, but it is slowly losing members at the moment. This is a subversion of the ideas of religious beliefs and practices.
I agree that the internet is kind of a barrier when it comes to religion. There are videos of people talking about and questioning other religions, and even some forms of media making some religions look bad. These simple forms of media are serving as obstacles or barriers, and in some ways changing how people look at religion.
If you never experience people questioning your religion then how can you know that you truly identify with it. When you see other people questioning and perhaps turning away from religion and you stay with it then you know that you truly belong as a part of that religion, whatever religion that may be. If you blindly follow the religion without knowing some of its possible faults then your not fully understanding what it means to be a part of that religion.
I'm not one to say that the internet is or isn't killing religion. Yet I do believe that it can help strengthen or dispell religion depending what your looking for. You really need to find belief of any religion within yourself, same with not believing in any sort of religion.
I think that the internet represents as a distraction to other people and that may affect on their religion. People read up on things of their religion and that presents as a distraction. But it sure doe not kill
I believe that the internet can go both ways. Inspire people to believe a religion or kill someones belief of religion. My reasoning is because the internet has different views on all topics. It's never one sided. So while people can read up on things that ruin their beliefs, there are also things they can red up on to enhance their beliefs or change to a different religion completely.
I do believe that the internet is killing religion. There are a lot of websites online that make fun of all religions. From jokes to memes, these things hurt a religion's reputation and that religion starts to lose followers. In order to stop this, I believe we should take down any and all sites that do this.
This proves that social media can effect people and their decisions in religion. How it can affect them in their decision making and how that can affect their daily lives. There is a lot of social media that turn people to go negative, change their perspective on everything. There are also unclean websites on the internet that also turn people negative, so those websites should be taken down.
I do think that the internet is killing religion. Social media like Instagram facebook is also killing media with all those # or reposting things about relgion stuff. I think we should take down any or all the sites that do this.
Sure the internet is incredibly powerful and influential, however I don't believe it is killing religion. I actually believe that the internet is assisting religion and increasing its influence. While this statement can see lucrative, examples can be found as to where this is true. Social media can help connect individuals to their religions and religious leaders, also it can educate people further on religion so they can be more educated on their religion or on other religions to understand them. Thusly, the internet actually bolsters religion and doesn't smother its influence.
I, in fact believe Internet is somewhat killing religion. There are thousands of sites that can really change one's belief about their religion. Religions that require meditation at certain times during the day can be broken due to the people being so focused on the internet.
